4 Sustainable Changes for Students to make right now

It’s so easy to get caught up in the mundane day to day things of life as busy PT students. Sometimes, we can get so busy that we totally forget that there’s a whole world spinning in the background behind us. We want to take action on the causes that matter most to us, but it seems impossible to do when we’re staring at a screen for what feels like 24/7. However, like with most things, if there’s a will, there’s a way.

As inhabitants of this Earth, we all have a responsibility to take care of our planet! There are so many things we can do, even in just the school setting, to start making a difference. Here are a few ways you can practice sustainability as a student!

Reusables – Did you know that by switching to a reusable water bottle, you can save up to 1,560 plastic bottles per year? If you haven’t made the transition yet, this is an easy way to get started. And it doesn’t just stop there. Opting for reusable coffee tumblers or bringing your own lunch in a reusable glass container are simple ways you can start making a difference.

Note Taking – Consider going digital and using devices such as a tablet or laptop to take notes instead of paper. This allows us to help prevent some effects of deforestation. Don’t forget, however, to routinely clean up your digital spaces to help reduce the cloud’s footprint (yes, even the cloud has a carbon footprint)! If this is not an option for you, reusable notebooks or notebooks from recycled materials will be your best alternative.

Tree Planting Initiatives – While studying, making use of companies or apps with tree planting initiatives is a simple and passive way to be a friend to our environment. Ecosia is a search engine that plants trees while you surf the web. Forest is another great productivity app that allows you to grow your own trees while keeping you off your phone while studying. After your own forest has enough trees, you can use what you earned on the app to plant a real-life tree in an actual forest.

Speak Up – If there’s one thing that we can all do, it’s to simply speak up about the subject to our friends and classmates, and continually educate ourselves on all things sustainability. Speaking to others is the greatest way to spread awareness and get others involved. You could even go so far as to start a club at school and start to make real change at the university level. The possibilities are truly endless.

At the end of the day, it’s not about individually taking drastic measures towards climate change. It’s about incorporating small changes in our day to day lives that add up to make all the difference in the world. Start wherever you can!
